Did you know that plants seek light and grow towards the source of light?
Having a steady source of light helps a plant to grow healthy.
But what if there is no active source of light?
Like in a forest, where thick foliage, larger trees block the light?
It might as well be in a room where accessing enough sunlight might mean they have to compete with other plants?
Plants have developed interesting strategies to capture the maximum amount of sunlight through their leaves. As we know from looking at plants on a windowsill, they grow toward the sunlight to be able to generate energy by photosynthesis. Now an international team of scientists has provided definitive insights into the driving force behind this movement — the plant hormone Auxin.
“Even mature plants bend toward the strongest light. They do this by elongating the cells of the stem on the side that is farthest from the light. This type of light-oriented growth is called phototropism,” explains Prof. Claus Schwechheimer from the Chair of Plant Systems Biology at the Technische Universität München (TUM).
At #Atrimed #PlantScience we always try and seek light too, to understand how we can take some of these amazing properties of plants and use them to find solutions to the health problems we have.
