Victoria is a genus of water-lilies, in the plant family Nymphaeaceae, with very large green leaves that lie flat on the water’s surface. The leaf of Victoria is able to support quite a large weight due to the plant’s structure, although the leaf itself is quite delicate. Credit: Wang Qingqin/Xinhua/Alamy Live News

The leaves of the goliath Amazon water lily can develop over 2.5m (8′). The blossoms are 30cm (12”) wide and the stems or leaf stalks develop alongside rising floodwaters and can surpass 6m (20′) long. These stunning plants are very much adjusted to life in the Amazon. They have sharp protective spines on the underside of their leaves, on their bloom buds, and leaf follows that guard them from fish and different creatures. The massive lily cushions remain above water due to a web-like structure of veins – all loaded up with air. They can even hold the weight of an average human child – in spite of the fact that we don’t suggest attempting it!! Their enormous leaf surface region causes them catch the most extreme measure of daylight and the red undersides of the leaf assist them with catching various frequencies of light boosting their capacity to make food much more! Aren’t they amazing?
