Do Cows have Inbuilt Compasses?

Do Cows have Inbuilt Compasses?

Yes. You read it right! Strangely enough, for centuries, people have not noticed this enough until someone figured it out. Seems like the bovine folk might have more knowledge than we assume about the Earth’s magnetism.

While some experienced farmers would explain this alignment of cows standing in the North-South direction as a way to absorb the maximum of the Sun’s rays and stay warm, scientists have another explanation.

Sabine Begali from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany used the best available technology to humankind – Google Earth, to spy on cows and found that even at night, cows aligned to the North-South routine. Begali’s team studied a vast sample of 8000 plus cows in over 300 locations across six continents. The study ended with the conclusion that cows might have magnetoreception. It indicates the ability to sense the earth’s magnetic field, but the reason is still a mystery.

Another scientist, Hynek Burda of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, also studied other animals like naked mole rats, which are practically blind but still could figure out the Earth’s magnetic North and South. We also see the same behaviour in deer and horses among other animals. One of the most common examples of the use of magnetoreception is by birds who fly long distances to migrate.

So, now that you know cows have figured out Earth’s magnetism, do you wonder what else they know?
