Can music keep mosquitoes away?

Can music keep mosquitoes away?

Don’t we all hate mosquitoes? Some of us also are allergic to the sprays and the fumes that are emitted when we heat up bug repellant coils. What if there was an easier and much more pleasant solution? Mosquitoes have been known to spoil precious moments you plan to spend outside in the evenings or under the moonlight. But you do not have to spend all the time scratching and clawing yourself due to the insect bites because music can come to your rescue here. Yes, you read that right. Playing US dubstep artist Skrillex’s music can help you keep mosquitoes away.

The post below will discuss the impact sound has on mosquitoes and how Skrillex’s music can affect these insects. This would be from the research conducted at the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Malaysia; Mosquito Research and Control Unit, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Fukuoka University, Japan. Yes, this is a topic of serious research study and the results have been really satisfying and promising. We are sure this triggers the need for more research and exploration.

How Does Skrillex’s Music Affect Mosquitoes?

According to various findings, sound played a significant role in the survival, reproduction, and maintenance of several animal species . And mosquitoes seem to exhibit it more prominently. There were experiments made to check whether electronic music has the potential to act as a mosquito repellent. During this study, scientists played Skrillex’s Nice Sprites and Scary Monsters because these tracks have a mixture of frequencies that are very low and very high. It was concluded that low-frequency sound waves aided in the reproductive processes, and on the other hand, high frequencies disrupted the perception of such signals among the mosquitoes.

Experts found out that the track entertained female mosquitoes, and they attacked their hosts less than in normal circumstances without electronic music. Scientists also found out that these insects mated less often in an environment with Skrillex’s music than their counterparts in a music-free environment.

It was believed that these findings could open scopes for developing control and protective measures against diseases that are transmitted from various types of mosquitoes.

So with the results of the study indicating a high chance that the flight rhythms of both male and female mosquitoes are disrupted when the music was bring played, female mosquitoes tried to feed on blood less often when the music was on and that there was a delay in choosing to feed on a human host, makes it an ultimate recipe for mosquito control. The added benefit would be if you like electronic music; you can get a chance to sing along too.

Is It Appropriate To Use Electronic Music As Mosquito Repellent?

Although there has been an extensive study on how electronic music affects the behaviour of mosquitoes, there also have been several debates opposing why this should not be used as an insect repellent. Several experts opine that it is inappropriate to do so. They believe that playing such noise only to keep mosquitoes away does not make any sense. It may not be an ideal option for everyone in and around that space.

What do we say?

So, if you are an ardent lover of Skrillex’s music and are being troubled by mosquitoes when the mood is set on a summer evening, you know what to do. However, it is suggested that you try it in a controlled space not to disturb people around, who are not much of a fan of such a genre as dubstep. Or maybe, you can play it whenever mosquitoes are active.
